FORUT in Sri LankaFORUT as a development agence has been in operation in Sri Lanka since 1981. FORUT Sri Lanka works in partnership with local communities and local government stakeholders, including the Samurdhi Authority, which is the government driven poverty alleviation initiative. FORUT reaches out to the communities through its own local operations across nine districts. In addition, as the lead agency working towards the prevention of alcohol and drug abuse in the country, FORUT has reached across a further six districts through a team of volunteers and its 4U youth network, which has an impressive 6500 members representing 25 DS Divisions. FORUT Sri Lanka has a long history of working with community development approaches and building local institutions. In areas affected by conflict, FORUT has a long term programme assisting and resettling internally displaced persons (IDPs). This long term commitment coupled with expertise in developing community partnerships has enabled FORUT Sri Lanka to initiate and implement a rapid and successful rehabilitation and reconstruction programme for thousands affected by the 2004 tsunami. FORUT's expertise in this arena also benefitted thousands of persons who were displaced due to the violent conflict i northern Sri Lanka.
Our commitmentFORUT Sri Lanka works with poor and marginalised communities through a Community Development approach, mobilising people in community based organisations to manage their own resources in a democratic and equitable manner, and to advocate their rights to basic services and resources.
When undertaking humanitarian assistance, FORUT operates in conflict and disaster affected communities, engaging in stabilising conditions in crisis, providing a safe, dignified and durable recovery from such situations.
