Alcohol, Drugs and HIV/AIDS in Africa

The African Centre for Research and Information on Substance Abuse (CRISA) has announced that its International Conference on “Drugs and Society in Africa” will take place in Abuja, Nigeria, in August 2010. The conference will focus on the role of alcohol and other drug use in the HIV/AIDS epidemics in different African societies.

The Ninth Biennial International Conference on “Drugs and Society in Africa” is sceduled for 11-12 August 2010.  It will take place in Abuja, Nigeria. The organizer is The Centre for Research and Information on Substance Abuse (CRISA). The major theme of the conference is Alcohol, Drugs and HIV/AIDS in Africa; Research, Prevention and Treatment Issues. Interested researchers in various disciplines, policy experts, practitioners, representatives of NGOs and students are encouraged to submit abstracts of papers for presentation at the conference.

The sub-themes of the conference are:

  • Epidemiology of substance use and HIV/AIDS
  • Social factors in HIV and substance abuse
  • Alcohol and high risk sexual behaviours
  •  Injecting drug use and HIV
  • Approaches to the prevention of substance use and HIV
  • Drug use and the course of HIV/AIDS
  • Alcohol and other STIs
  • Adherence to anti-retroviral therapy (ART) and other treatment issues
  •  HIV, drugs and mental health
  • Substance abuse, infectious diseases and social development
  • Other papers on any aspect of legal and illegal drugs in Africa will be accepted for presentation.

CRISA was founded in October 1990 in Jos, Nigeria, as an independent, non-profit, community service organization devoted to drug abuse research and prevention, and the promotion of healthy lifestyles. It also publishes the African Journal of Drug & Alcohol Studies. This international scientific journal publishes original research, evaluation studies, case reports, review articles and book reviews of high scholarly standards. Papers submitted for publication may address any aspect of alcohol and drug use and dependence in Africa and among people of African descent living anywhere in the world.
