Alcohol and drugs have not been given much attention as a development issue, in spite of the fact that development NGOs, both local NGOs in South and their donor organizations, regularly meet and realize the detrimental effects of substance abuse on development. The effects can be observed both on individuals, local communities and whole nations.

To address such problems require competence, material and methods, and the lack of such resources in the development community may be one of the reasons why many NGOs and governments have been hesitant to involve themselves in alcohol and drug problems.

FORUT – The Norwegian Campaign for Development and Solidarity – has specialized in alcohol and drugs as a development issue. Now they have their used their competence on the topic to make a set of tools that can be used by other development agencies. The aim is to make it easier for non-specialized NGOs and governments to involve in alcohol and drug prevention and to make strategies and interventions more effective.

The new tools are:

  • TEN STEPS: Alcohol and Drug Prevention for Development Agencies
  • Assessing the Alcohol and Drug Situation
  • The new ADD web site: www.add-resources.org
  • ADD Curriculum
  • The ADD Bulletin
  • FORUT Approach to Alcohol and Drug Prevention
  • Fact sheets
  • Strategies to Address Alcohol Problems

Click here to read more about the tools and to download them to your computer.

What is now available is the first generation of the material, not the final version. The use of the tools will generate experience that can be used to improve the material over time. New tools will also be added to the tool kit, step by step. The next ones are already in the pipeline.
